How's it going? Here's a little story that I feel like telling. I'll warn you in advance, I just ate a bag of chipotle (I looked up how to spell it) microwave popcorn so I'm feeling a little randy. Way back when I was a little kid, McDonald's was having a promotion where they were selling movies for some reason. One of these movies was Adams Family. More importantly Back to the Future was also one of the featured movies. I got both of them and quite possible more that were available, but I can't remember for sure. So that was my first introduction to one of the best movies ever.
Don't worry the story doesn't end quite yet, there's a little bit of drama to be had. Needless so say I loved Back to the Future from the first time I saw it. The movie was hilarious, action packed and very clever. (Now, if you've only seen the film in its original theatrical release, you may be confused with this next part a little bit. Don't worry, it's all true). (Also - Spoiler Warning. If you want the end of the movie to be a surprise skip to the next paragraph). The movie ends on a cliff hanger with Doc Brown arriving from the future(!) to tell Marty there's something wrong with his kids. They take Jennifer and fly(!) into the future. The home video version then adds a "to be continued" that was not in the original release.
This ending did nothing but greatly increase my thirst for more Flux Capacitor action. The high achieved after viewing eventually came crashing down when it turned out McDonald's was not selling the sequels. No problem right? Just go to an actual video store, they'll have them. But they did not have them. In fact, my parents took me to many stores and we could not find either sequel anywhere. I was heart broken.
Now, I'll admit we never tried to rent the films (in fact I've never rented a movie in my life) but lots of searching gave no results. Years went by. At least it felt like years. In reality it was at least one year but probably not much more then two. Eventually we stumbled upon a store that came to the rescue. I think it was FYE but it was so long ago that I can't remember for sure. Well they didn't have them in stock, but they did order both of them for us and called when they were in stock. I was thrilled. I actually still have the moment of when I started watching the second movie etched in my brain. It was Christmas eve and my family watched Back to the Future II as our traditional night before Christmas movie.
I really cannot wait until the trilogy comes out on Blu-Ray.
